Endoscopist deskilling risk after exposure to artificial intelligence in colonoscopy

Budzyń, Romańczyk, Kitala and co-authors followed four endoscopy centres where physicians had worked with AI-assisted colonoscopy. When researchers measured how good the same physicians were at detecting polyps without the AI support, accuracy had dropped from 28.4 to 22.4 percent. Published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology in August 2025, the study is among the first to show measurable clinician "deskilling" after AI exposure, with direct implications for how AI tools are rolled out in practice and how clinicians are trained.
